Bognor
Regis Swimming Club welcomed Commonwealth Gold Medallist,
Alex Scotcher, on Sunday 2nd December to its
training base at The Arena, in Bognor Regis.
Alex called time on his
career in swimming after the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and
since then he has toured the Country inspiring young
swimmers and passing on his wealth of knowledge on how to
make it in swimming.
Alex, now 27, began to see
great successes in his late teens. He was a member of the
British squad for six years and was a member of England 's
victorious 4x200m Freestyle team at the Melbourne Games. Alex
cites England 's relay triumph in Melbourne , where the
Australians had been undefeated for 58 years, as the pinnacle of
his career. Alex’s other achievements include being a member of
the World Championship squad and a holder of two British records
and numerous British Championships on both backstroke and
freestyle.
On Sunday Alex spent the day
with the Swimmers running an excellent Swim Clinic. Thanks
to a grant from the Youth Opportunities Fund, through West
Sussex County Council, the Club was able to open up the event to
43 of our swimmers.
There were three parts to the
day including land training where Alex demonstrated the G.B.
team stretching and land training drills to strength the “core”
and lengthen the muscles; and a two hour pool session where
looking at “streamlining”, the “fine art of turning” and
“getting ahead with the start”. But it was in a “Motivational
Talk” that the swimmers were most inspired as Alex talked about
his race in Melbourne (voted the ‘Most Exciting Race of the
Games’) and passed on his tips for getting ahead on the “mental”
side of swimming.
